October 19, 2020 @ 8:00 am - October 23, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

Learn Wood Carving with Alexander Grabovetskiy

Classical Sign & Letter Carving

Traditional Carving Techniques

This lettering and sign carving class, taught by world-renown Alexander Grabovetskiy, will give you the skills to add creative, unique details to all your woodworking projects.

Alexander has designed this introductory course for carver, furniture makers, graphic designers,  sign makers, and anyone who wants to create beautiful lettering in wood with sharp carving tools.

Instruction begins with the selection and sharpening of carving tools, followed by learning the key cuts that recombine to form the entire alphabet.

You will start with classic Roman lettering,  and practice making straight, curved, and combined cuts to form letters. Additional topics include serifs, spacing, scale, typography, and finishing options such as glue gilding.

The final project is a small sign or monogram with a carved border

The bulk of each day will be focused on hands-on time, and we will focus on:

How to Sharpen Wood Carving Chisels

Learn how to sharpen your tools so that you have better control and learn what the term “hot knife through butter” means.  You will learn to sharpen with confidence and efficiency.  Sharp tools that easily bite into the wood and do not skate are an essential ingredient for woodcarving.

How to Design Wood Carvings

Learn how to design your wood carving projects using references and sources of imagery, as well as the techniques of drawing in the classical tradition.  This approach to building your design will expand your imagination, and the steps to creating your projects will start to come more easily to you.

How to Carve

Learn the mechanical steps in the process of carving, including how to handle your carving tools.  You will learn how to rough out the beginnings of your project and how to do the delicate detailing at the end. You will discover the proper hand technique.

Wood carving is a skill where you use your body as well as your hand to control the gouges. Wood carving is all in the technique, and learning the correct body mechanic steps will make it flow much more easily.  You will start by working on a few simple boards that will include the techniques of using gouges to do the majority of outlining and defining the lines of the designs and then move on from there.

We will also discuss how to make the tools do a variety of cuts, even when the wood grain is not cooperating!
