Learn Wood Carving with Alexander Grabovetskiy

This week presents an opportunity to engage in woodcarving under the guidance of one of the world’s premier carvers, Alexander. The class kicks off with Alexander demonstrating the most efficient and quickest methods to sharpen woodcarving tools. Participants delve into a woodcarving project, applying carving tools to outline and define their design’s intricate lines. Alexander imparts knowledge on visualizing in 3D and maneuvers discussions towards leveraging carving tools for various cuts, even with uncooperative wood grain.

As learners progress, they gain insights into the complete woodcarving process, from inception to completion, enhancing their carving efficiency. The curriculum then advances to more sophisticated woodcarving techniques, drawing from the classical tradition of carving. Throughout the week, as students become more adept at the carving process, Alexander addresses a pivotal question in woodcarving: how to conceptualize the ‘BIG idea’ in carving designs.

Together, Alexander and the students embark on a joint woodcarving project design, utilizing ancient mathematical methods applicable across various woodcarving disciplines, whether it be in furniture carving, three-dimensional (3D) carving, or ornamental and architectural woodcarving.
